I read this book a long while back and absolutely adored it.

Go into this prepared for a wonderful amount of mess and gore, but also lots of gooey feelings. Finally, I adored the heroine's relationship with her best friend. This story subverted a lot of tropes of the genre in a way I found fun and fresh. (A ruthless cinnamon roll who fit this universe, but a cinnamon roll nonetheless.) You guys are probably aware that combo is catnip for me, so I was having an excellent time. Reading this book was a rollercoaster ride and I kept envisioning it as a super dramatic film or TV show with a twisted, badass heroine and a cinnamon roll hero. Relatable realism meets spooky season whimsy. Oh, and he's a definite stern brunch daddy. Also, he's supposed to be helping Gemma with her sister issue, but she refuses to be saved and instead shows him he has a sister issue of his own. Levi is dealing with the whole 'being a ghost' thing, but he also had so much personal growth to go through regarding his life back home, and an impossible choice to make that yanked my guts out and had me on the edge of my seat. (She fails.) She's also a very Eve Brown sort of character which made her POV super fun. Gemma is dealing with the discovery of her long-lost sister, the responsibility of caring for the ghost she accidentally turned solid (with her mouth), and the stress of trying not to fall on his mouth again. The sarcasm and banter is so fun but then you'll be slapped in the face with Deep Emotional Questions that make you feel very deeply for these characters. What a bonkers delight this story is with its ghostly makeout sessions and forced proximity/fake relationship and interdimensional theory, all grounded with that trademark Beharrie emotional depth.
